YWCA Darwin acknowledges the Larrakia Nation as the Traditional Owners of the land on which we operate. We pay our respects to their elders past and present.

YWCA Darwin is a community based membership organisation that has been operating since 1969 and was incorporated in 1977.

Membership is open to any woman over the age of 18 years, who accepts the purpose and mission and pays the membership fee. Full members are entitled to vote and hold office; young women aged 5-18 years may join as junior members; men and organisations may join as associate members but may not vote or hold office.

As a member of YWCA Darwin you have the opportunity to:

  • Be a member of the largest and oldest worldwide women's organisation
  • Develop leadership skills at local, national and international levels
  • Bring your individual skills to an organisation informed and governed by women who work from a feminist perspective
  • Participate and assist us at special events.

Purpose

YWCA Darwin is part of a worldwide women’s volunteer membership movement, the World YWCA. The purpose of the YWCA movement is to develop the leadership and collective power of women and girls around the world to achieve human rights, health, security, dignity, freedom, justice and peace for all people.

Mission

YWCA Darwin will:

  • Provide high quality programs benefiting women of all ages.
  • Be a leading advocate for women’s needs and issues.
  • Apply flexible and supportive employment practices.
  • Have innovative, environmentally responsive practices.
  • Have sound and ethical leadership and management informed by feminist principles.

Outcomes

  • Women and children are strong, safe and empowered.
  • The status and value of women is understood and unquestioned.
  • The environment is cared for and respected.

Our Work

In Darwin and Palmerston, YWCA Darwin has a focus on youth homelessness, youth at risk and families escaping domestic and family violence. We provide a range of services, including crisis accommodation for young people and families, medium term accommodation and ongoing programs, support and advocacy to assist people to move from crisis to independence, parenting support programs and the Youth Diversion Program. In addition we:

  • Provide a high-quality accommodation at Barbara James House for a welcoming and home like environment for outpatients to the public and private hospitals in Darwin through the Doctor Helen Phillips Cottages Program.
  • Operate two social enterprises - Food for Futures (conference and catering) and Shine for Futures (laundry and housekeeping)
  • Navigate - mentoring and support for young men and women.

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors are volunteers representing Darwin women in various occupations and stages of life, and are responsible for the strategic direction of YWCA Darwin Inc. Each woman on the Board contributes expertise and guidance in the areas where they have skills and experience.
